The TSGC Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Task Force was formed in June 2020 to increase diversity in the Texas genetic counseling community. The Task Force became a committee of TSGC in 2021.

Genetic counseling is a career that embraces diversity in knowledge and humankind, promoting education, action, and autonomy in healthcare. Despite the profession’s framework in diversity, only 2% of all genetic counselors identify as Black or African American. As part of TSGC’s DEI initiatives, TSGC is offering application and National Matching Services fee reimbursements to Black and African American applicants to Texas genetic counseling programs. TSGC promotes all diversity and believes it is foundational in genetics and hopes to expand DEI initiatives to other underrepresented groups in the future.

The TSGC NMS/Application Fee Reimbursement Survey for Fall 2023 Admission Cycle is now closed.

  • This reimbursement resource is intended for individuals applying to genetic counseling programs in Texas. If you are an applicant and identify as Black or African American, please fill out the survey after you have applied to a Texas genetic counseling program and have receipts of payment available. A member of the DEI Committee will be in contact with you if additional information is needed and for confirmation of your request.

  • All materials for reimbursement must be submitted by Friday, January 12, 2024. Reimbursements will be distributed on a first come first serve basis until funds are exhausted. We understand if you need to request reimbursements at separate times, but we strongly encourage you to submit only once.

If you are a Black or African American applicant who is matched with a Texas genetic counseling program this year, you may be eligible to receive a one-time stipend. Please contact TSGCDEI@gmail.com to learn more about the stipend after you are matched.
